How to maintain a wooden floor?
The first step in maintaining a wooden floor in the best condition is to create the best climatic conditions, especially during the autumn-winter period. This is when the relative humidity of the air in the apartment drops due to central heating, resulting in the boards drying out. Optimal conditions include an air temperature of 20 degrees and air humidity ranging from 45% to 60%.
The next stage of maintenance is to eliminate the biggest enemy of a wooden floor, which is sand. It is worth investing in a very good doormat, or if possible, even several doormats at the entrance. Sand on shoes acts on a wooden floor like sandpaper, creating scratches and dulling the top layer. It is also important to remember to regularly vacuum the parquet with a soft brush.
The next step is proper floor care. There are different methods for caring for a wooden parquet floor depending on its finish - lacquer or oil-wax:
- Lacquer care - after thoroughly vacuuming the entire parquet, it's time to wash it. You will need a flat mop, a bucket, and chemical products recommended for the lacquer used on the floor. These are available at specialized floor sales points. Using high-quality care products guarantees protection of the lacquer from becoming dull. Washing should be done with a well-wrung mop, slightly damp, to limit the amount of water on the floor. We recommend using a lacquer impregnation product once a year. Applying it to the parquet will refresh the lacquer and give it back its original shine. There are products available in various levels of glossiness.
- Oil-wax care - this is done very similarly to a lacquered floor. The parquet should also be thoroughly vacuumed before washing. The floor should be washed with a very well-wrung mop as well. When using detergent in water, it should be a product specifically for oil-wax care. Using these components during washing replenishes the hard wax that wears off the floor with use. Replenishing the wax gaps will be crucial in caring for oil-wax floors. If the wax starts to wear off heavily and is not replenished, there is a risk of dark spots appearing. Therefore, it is also recommended to use a special impregnator for oil-wax floors. It comes in the form of a milky liquid applied to the previously vacuumed and washed parquet. This impregnation fully replenishes the worn oil wax. It should be used depending on the intensity of floor use, but at least once a year.
In conclusion, to maintain the original properties of the floor, it is important to remember about the appropriate humidity in the room and to limit the risk of sand and water getting on the wooden parquet. Additionally, only use floor cleaning products recommended by the manufacturer of the lacquer or oil-wax used to finish the parquet. Using them according to the guidelines ensures keeping the floor in very good condition for a long period of use.
